How to Prep Yourself for Swimming Lessons

Swimming undoubtedly has numerous benefits. It's a lot of fun, it's great exercise for your body, and it could actually end up saving your life one day. Fortunately, learning how to swim isn't particularly difficult and there are also many ways to do it. Some people choose to seek help from a professional, while others get by pretty well simply by teaching themselves.

Whichever way you decide to learn, it's extremely important that you get into the right mindset even before stepping into the pool. Below are a few pieces of advice that can help you do just that. Follow these tips in order to effectively condition your mind and body to learn how to swim:

Fear is the enemy

In most cases, the only thing that's stopping people from learning how to swim is fear. Fear that they're going to drown, fear of sharks, fear of a lot of things. Now, a certain amount of fear, is okayâ€"it's healthy, even. But if it gets to the point where you can't even step into the water, then before even learning how to swim, you'll first have to learn how to manage your fear.

Unfortunately though, there isn't a quick fix or anecdote that can keep you from being scared. The only way to get rid of your fear of swimming is to actually face it head on.

Swim with People You Trust

Most people ease up in the water they have their friends or family in there with them. If you find yourself dreading the water, consider implementing a buddy system when you go out to swim. Never dip into the pool unless you're with someone that you trust and someone who knows how to swim. The presence of other peopleâ€"especially the ones that you know and loveâ€"can immensely make you more comfortable.

Keep up with the buddy system until you're really at home in the water and you're sure that you can be in the pool alone.

Get into Gear

Wearing the right swimming gear won't just make you look cool in the water, it will also allow you to be a better swimmer. Never skimp on water gear, specifically swimsuits, swimming caps, and goggles, especially when you're just starting out. The right swimsuit will let you move more comfortably, thus making learning easier. A swimming cap on the other hand can effectively keep your hair out of your face so you can focus on swimming instead of wiping your face. And goggles? They'll protect your eyes and allow you to keep them open underwater. This not only prevents your eyes from getting irritated, but you'll definitely be more comfortable because you'll be able to see what's happening around you even when you're submerged.

Warm up

Always do stretches and warm up exercises before getting into the pool to prevent your body from cramping up. Muscle cramps are very common among swimmers and they are also one of the major causes for drowning.

If muscle cramps do occur when you're in the water, do not panic. Bring yourself towards the edge of the pool and try get yourself out as soon as you can.
